Our shelter building project is carried out in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Cambodia (http://habitatcambodia.org/ ), building basic homes and toilets, and repairing existing houses for the poorest families who don’t have safe or satisfactory housing.
CLS consults with community officials to identify those in greatest need. It then organises materials and labour for construction, and follows up to ensure satisfactory completion. For several years afterwards, CLS visits families assisted to ensure they look after their new homes, that their children attend school, and to check for any further needs that may arise.
With a satisfactory home, family health improves, children’s attendance at school is more regular, and parents are often better equipped to earn a living.
There is scope for volunteers to fund and participate in small building projects outside the Habitat program. This can involve such work as repairing existing houses or constructing toilets for needy families.
Provide a needy family with a basic home for US$1,900, a toilet for $550, or repair an existing house for US$600.
